OnlyOffice / capabilities

What it covers

A Document Server on its own VM, protected by JWT and wired to Nextcloud with the connector — the file stays in Nextcloud, editing happens in OnlyOffice.

Simultaneous editing

Several people on one file — cursors, comments and changes in real time.

Separate server

The Document Server runs on its own VM — it does not consume Nextcloud RAM and CPU.

JWT protection

Server-to-server traffic is signed with tokens — the Document Server is never left open to the internet.

Nextcloud connector

The official app connects the two systems — a file opens from Nextcloud and is saved back there.

Permissions

Edit, comment or view only — Nextcloud permissions apply directly to the document.

Versions and restore

Every save creates a version — accidentally deleted text comes back with one click.

Common questions

Is a separate server required?

Recommended. It can share a VM, but a separate server is more stable and does not slow Nextcloud down.

Do Microsoft Office files open?

Yes — .docx, .xlsx and .pptx fully. Files are saved in the same format, so compatibility is preserved.

Is there a licence fee?

The Community Edition is free and enough for most teams. Only Enterprise features are paid.
